Accomplishments by the Residential Advisory Board in 2004-2005
Creation of Committees
RAB created six committees, each chaired by a different member, to break down various issues throughout the campus community:
- Academics - To program College House events that promote academic resources available on campus. (such as The Wheel, Resource Centers, Student Services, etc.)
- Communication - To assist in the advertisement and marketing campaign for RAB issues and/or events.
- Diversity - To collaborate with other campus resources, such as LGBT Center, GIC, and PACE, to facilitate diverse campus activities.
- Facilities - To assist with the housing issues students face (such as Building Upkeep, Amenity Rooms, etc.)
- College House Cup - To collaborate with a Wharton Management 100 team (advised by Dr. Frank Pellicone, Harrison College House Dean) in organizing College House events that will encourage College House pride and competition.
- Special Events - To create and organize special events that encourage inter-house interaction and to assist Academic and Diversity Committees with planning activities (such as Homecoming, Holidays, Concerts, Movies, Shopping, etc.)
Special Events on Campus
RAB Members assisted with various University events in 2004-2005, including:
- President Gutmann’s Inauguration
- Homecoming 2004
- Dr. Martin Luther King’s Commemorative Symposium on Change
- Souls of Du Bois Conference
Focus Groups
RAB Members served on various University focus groups covering a variety of topics, including:
- College Houses and Academic Services Housing Brochure
- Dining Advisory Board
- Telecommunications
- Online Directory
Platform for Campus and Community Organizations
RAB provided a link for campus and community groups to spread information into the College Houses. Events from campus groups like Makuu and the LGBT Center were supported and attended by RAB. Meetings were used as a discussion forum for other events in addition to being a place to distribute free tickets to Miramax movie premieres and Bridge De Lux College Film Series events. RAB was also the driving force behind hosting three Mouse Management 101 events in Gregory, Stouffer and Mayer to teach students on how to eradicate and elevate pest problems in their rooms.
College House Cup
RAB worked together with Team Titans, a Management 100 group, and Dr. Frank Pellicone on the commencement of the first annual College House Cup. Team Titans provided the structure for a successful kick-off event where they hosted a football tournament between the College Houses as well as holding various field day activities. Dr. Pellicone and Harrison College House provided funding for prizes including an iPod Mini and an Xbox. The event was attended by approximately 200 people and College Houses and Academic Services provided funding for t-shirts to be used at the event and in future Cup competitions.
RAB continues the success of the Cup by coordinating with the Department of Recreation to have an Intramural College House League, where College Houses can enter teams to compete for points that would be totaled towards an annual House Cup award. Such events include softball, basketball, and our first Dodgeball Tournament. The website for the College House Cup is located at http://www.collegehouses.upenn.edu/rab/cup.
RAB HapPENNings
Originally, RAB published a newsletter called “RAB HapPENNings” in an aim to create a more communal bonding between the College Houses. The goal was to cross-promote events that are going on to foster more interaction between residents of the College Houses. Now, RAB has worked with Mike LaMonaca and College House Computing to create an online calendar of events, in addition to hosting discussion forms for residents. The new site of the RAB HapPENNings will be advertised during the summer to incoming students as one of the instrumental ways to find out what is going on in the College Houses. The website for the RAB HapPENNings is located at http://www.rescomp.upenn.edu/happennings (*Please note that in Fall 2005 the title of this project was changed to CHASevents.com*)
Residential Assistant (RA) Application Date Moved
RAB has pushed for a move of the dates involved in RA section. In prior years, residents did not find out if they were accepted as an RA until after the general housing deadline, thus if they were not accepted they had to look to off-campus housing for the following year. By moving the date, applicants will know if they are accepted before the general housing application deadline so that they may apply to live on-campus.
Folding Shopping Carts for College House Residents
RAB purchased folding carts that will be available to sign out at the Information Desks of the College Houses. Residents will be able to sign out the carts with their PennCard and then take them to local stores like Fresh Grocer and CVS to do their shopping.
Ikea Trip
RAB hosted and provided funding for buses to bring students from campus down to the new Ikea location in Philadelphia. The event was attended by approximately 100 students.
Penn Previews
RAB Representatives were enlisted to serve on a College House Panel during Penn Previews to discuss the mission of RAB as well as encourage first-year students to become members. RAB Reps also showed their rooms to visiting first-year students and parents.
