Art Safari Treks Through Callowhill Galleries

The Four-Year Houses (Du Bois, Gregory, Stouffer and New College Houses) went on safari on September 7, trekking through the wild savannah of the Callowhill neighborhood just north of Center City, on the hunt for outsider art!  With tour guides Roberta Fallon and Imani Roach from Artblog, these intrepid explorers planned to visit 7 alternative art gallery spaces during the First Friday openings, when galleries across the city open for special free exhibitions.

The safari took in Vox Populi Gallery, Practice Gallery, Grizzly Grizzly Gallery, Marginal Utility Gallery, Napoleon Gallery, Automat Gallery, and then took a break at Wood Street Pizza for some rest and relaxation.  They followed it up with a visit to Space 1026, and rather than coming back to campus right away as planned, they decided to take in one more gallery before returning to University City.

The safari got rave reviews from the attendees.  The most moving exhibit chronicled the artist's life story coming to terms with her transgender identity, and several students found that the exhibit, which was presented by the artist herself, had brought new understanding about the transgender experience.  With admiration for the depth of the participants' engagement with the challenging and provocative artworks on display, CHAS's Director of Four-Year Houses Ryan Keytack, who accompanied the group on safari, called the event "possibly the best event we've had in a long time."
