On February 23, kindergarten through sixth-grade students from West Philadelphia's Jubilee School visited Du Bois College House for a celebration of Dr. Du Bois's 148th birthday, with a visit from Dr. Tukufu Zuberi, a spoken-word performance by the African American Arts Alliance, and of course plenty of cake!
The African American Arts Alliance presented a new piece, a reaction to the 1985 firebombing of the MOVE black liberation group and the surrounding residential neighborhood by Philadelphia police. The children talked about how the piece made them feel, and then split into groups to do performance warmup exercises with the artists. There were opportunities to make birthday cards for Dr. Du Bois and to do worksheets and other activities about his life and work.
